The “smart urban packaging waste collection system” aims to increase the recycling rates through the active participation of citizens and thereby contribute to the preservation of the environment. The idea of smart recycling is based on the use of digital and innovative solutions, as well as motivating citizens to actively get involved and contribute to more efficient management of packaging waste.

The project is based on partnership and cooperation of leading companies and institutions from the private, civil and public sector.

The technology was developed by the domestic start-up company Solagro Smart Recycling and the German company Reverse Logistics Group (RLG), whose software solutions enable the collection of precise data on the process of collecting packaging and its placement for recycling in real time. By application of unique data matrix codes on selected packaging units, the system enables product serialization and traceability of each single unit from the placement on the market to return into recycling process.

This project is part of develoPPP program of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in partnership with the companies Ball Packaging Europe, Mercator-S, Solagro Smart Recycling, Reverse Logistics Group (RLG) and Sekopak. The joint project is supported by the National Alliance for Local Economic Development (NALED), the international program Every Can Counts and the companies Coca-Cola Hellenic, Carlsberg, Tetra Pak, Red Bull and Knjaz Miloš.
